Verizon Doesn\'t Want to Hear Me Now!

Monday, August 29th, 2005

(Thanks to Engadget.com by way of TreoBits.com for pointing me to this article I missed when it first appeared earlier this year.)
As if I didn’t have enough reasons to question why I listened to some other friends/associates and stuck with Verizon rather than switching to Sprint or another service, the San Francisco Chronicle has an interview with Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, wherein he makes the following brilliant declaration:

“Why in the world would you think your (cell) phone would work in your house? The customer has come to expect so much.”

I Don\'t Give a Rat\'s Ass About Coachella

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

Just got the latest issue of Lighting & Sound America in the mail today. Imagine my shock when one of the cover articles is the bazillionth story in the last few months about the Coachella festival.

I’ll say it clearly, on the chance that any of the powers-that-be at any of the trade mags are actually seeing this. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s sick and tired of reading the same basic article about the same damned festival in every magazine in the industry; let alone when the same magazine does more than one article on it. And I’m pretty sure there were at least a couple articles on this festival in the mags last year, too. Enough already!

Emptying the MT1

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

A while back, I posted about ClearCom’s MT1 and what a wonderful device it is for tying touring systems to house systems without any buzz hassles. Kevin McCoy replied, noting that according to ClearCom the MT1 provides termination for both systems, so to avoid double-termination issues, you need to turn off termination on both systems’ base stations. Of course, this makes it a huge PITA for both the touring guy and the house guy. Since I’d never run into issues with the MT1 I had on tour last season causing double-termination, I suggested that somebody had probably removed the terminating resistor from the MT1, but I never had a chance to open it up and investigate.

Some Thoughts on Attitude

Posted from: New Brunswick, NJ

For the last couple weeks, I’ve been doing some work for a local sound company
as FOH tech/engineer for a wide variety of bands (from Tyler Hilton and Aaron
Carter to Kansas to Billy Ray Cyrus to Jimmy Sturr’s Polkapalooza, with mixing
a rather good Klezmer group thrown into the middle for kicks). So far, it’s
proven to be an interesting change of pace, not just to be doing some non-theatre
work for a little bit, but also in that it’s been a chance to play both sides
of the coin–simultaneously being somewhat of a road guy as far as the venue
is concerned, and the house guy as far as the road guy is concerned. What’s
been really educational is the chance to work with such a wide variety of touring
engineers in such a short period of time, which certainly is a good way to learn
what works and what doesn’t in various situations.
