One Helluva Com System Headset

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

This week, I’ve got a guest tutorial courtesy of a longtime friend of OFTR, Mat Goebel. Mat’s put in the legwork ironing out how to convert both a Motorola two-way radio earpiece/boom headset and a Plantronics cell headset into two of the most comfortable com headsets either.

Mat will walk you through wiring up the necessary power supply to power the electret mics in both of these headsets, as well as getting it all attached to a 4-pin connector for the com system.

So, check it out, and I’ll be back when I’m back,
Andy

Okay, so you know that nasty, painful, dry cracking you get on the side joints of your fingers after a couple days of pulling cable or rope? You know how none of the normal “hand goo” you buy in the pharmacy does a reasonable job of making that go away? Worry no longer, my friend, because if you can get past the name of it and actually convince yourself to try the stuff, I’m going to share a secret with you.

Hey gang,
A fuller update coming soon, but first, two articles from trade magazines that really “get it”.

The first is from the November ‘05 issue of FOH, where in an interview with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang A1 Scott Sanders, some great insight into what really goes into mixing for theatre is shared (”What? It’s more than just bringing up the mic when they come onstage and turning it off when they exit?! Really?”).

Second, check out this series of articles from Keith Shuford about his transition from a concert engineer to mixing the Vegas production of Mamma Mia.
