Treo Software: ProfileCare and ScheduleCare

My latest review has been posted at TreoBits, putting a really cool set of Treo add-ons called ProfileCare and ScheduleCare through their paces.

P.S.-I’ve been making all the links here at OFTR using the “blank” target attribute to open them in a new window, so when you’re done you can come back here to OFTR without having to navigate backwards, by just closing the window/tab.

I did it this way because that’s the way I like to surf most of the time, having mid-article links come up in a new tab in my browser (if you can’t tell, I’m a diehard Firefox user). I’ll put it to a vote, though…let me know in comments if you like it this way, or if you’d prefer if links here just come up in the same window and you can navigate back here on your own. If enough people prefer it that way, I’m happy to make the change!

Andy – I use a browser called Maxthon. Maxthon is a front end for IE. It is a tabbed browser, like firefox. The killer feature for maxthon, IMHO, which I have not found in firefox, is drag and drop tabbing. Drag a link and a new tab will open with that link. Select and drag some text and a search will open in a new tab (selectable which search engine to use).

I would like to get away from the IE security flaws, but haven’t found another browser that supports link dragging and search dragging.

A quick gripe about your site. No, not the fact that your RSS feed is only partial posts. As a color blind person, I find it difficult to locate the links in your text. Whatever color you use for the links does not stand out from the black text

    Hey Brian,
Thanks for the comments! I’ll have to look into the RSS thing, I have it just doing it however the default was, but I’ll see about getting the full posts in it.

As for the links, I’m actually planning on at least a full color scheme change, if not a full redesign, in the near future. I just suck at the coding side of things, so I need to find somebody out there in reader-land who might be willing to help out!

Now, dragging and dropping. Firefox does support dragging of links into a new tab…just drag it up to the tab bar and it opens in its own tab. I didn’t even know it could do that, so thanks for making me try!

It doesn’t seem to support dragging selected text to create a search, but there might be an extension to do that, I don’t know if you’ve looked? I’m bummed, because a lot of other great extensions I had got broken a few versions ago, and I haven’t found updates for them yet. But I digress…

What will work is if you have the Google search box in your toolbar. In that case, you can select text and drag and drop it into the Google box. I’m not sure if it will automatically start the search for you, since I don’t have the Google bar installed, but if not, you just have to hit “enter” to do it. Not quite as slick, but close.

P.S.-On another color question, and not knowing what kind of color blindness you have, did you have any trouble with the validation code? Obviously you got it sorted out, but I realize that the script I use for that doesn’t have any alternative options. If those colors don’t work for people, I’m more than willing to try to find an alternative.

The validiation code definitely works to stop spam, though, I haven’t had to deal with a single piece of comment spam since I installed it. Of course I just jinxed myself by saying that, but…

Follow-up on drag and drop searching in Firefox…check out this extension, called “Web Search Pro”.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/552/

Among many other features, its description reads, “Introducing a new and inovative way to search the web: Drag & DropZones, just drag text on any website, and drop it in one of your 16 fully customizable DropZones, and your search will be started”

Okay, it should be set for full text feeds now. Not sure how long it takes to update, but if it doesn’t go back and update the previous ones, it should definitely have the full text from now on!

Thanks for updating the rss feed. Much easier to read now.

I have tried the drag-and-drop onto the tab bar in firefox. Maybe I am too lazy, but with maxthon I can drop the link or text anywhere to open a new tab. Just grab it and drop it an inch away and you are set.

I can see the validation code no problem. Yahoo’s validation code, otoh, drives me nuts.
