New MiniMag Tailcap Switch from Terralux

Just a quickie here before I go to bed. I was browsing past the TerraLux site to see if there was anything new, and indeed, found that lots has been up lately.

Most notably, to me, was that they’ve released their own tailcap switch for the AA MiniMag. I immediately went about getting one to check out, and I think we finally have a Kroll killer.
TerraLux's new tailcap switch
It’s got a metal machined body that perfectly matches a black MiniMag AA in shape, feel, and color, with a red, rubber-capped switch on the tail. since the switch is on the end, but the outer body is metal, the flashlight still slides easily into any holster; the one major downside to the Kroll is that tighter holsters are quite a snug fit, and even loose ones can be a struggle.

The TerraLux’s switch is firm enough to not easily turn on accidentally in your bag or on your belt, but is still easy to push.

The tailcap also features a hole for a lanyard, and in fact comes not only with a small wrist strap lanyard, but with a spare lens as well (even if that has nothing to do with the tailcap, it’s an appreciated accessory!).

The only very minor gripe I have is the same I had with the first Ram switch I reviewed, that the switch is NC, which means that the momentary “flash” action is to turn the light off from an on state. I find it much more useful to have the light turn on with the momentary push.

Again, though, while a nice bonus, the momentary on isn’t a real necessity in most uses, so this didn’t stop me from immediately replacing the Kroll on my primary light with TerraLux’s.

The cap normally retails for $5.95, although I did at one point come across a retailer offering it on sale for $3.95. At either price, it’s a bargain.

have you checked out the new led maglite’s yet? They make a replacement lamp for the C and D cell lights. And the AA lights are all new, a little bit longer than the regular ones, and over double the price. But it’s a much brighter light, with longer battery life, so it all evens out in the end.

Sorry for the delayed response, Eric…somehow the comment notification e-mails got broken. Grr.

    Anyway, http://www.onefromtheroad.com/index.php?p=117

Will these work with the new LED Maglites? I bought a conversion kit for my old Maglite that came with 3 LEDs and a tailcap switch which worked great, but it doesn’t fit the LED Maglite that my wife bought me for Christmas.

I honestly am not sure, David, but let me e-mail my contact at TerraLux and inquire.

Hey, David–I heard back from my contact at TerraLux, and he said that their switch won’t fit the LED MiniMags, as Mag changed the size/threading of the tailcap on that model.

Thanks for checking on that for me Andy.
